DOHA 13 June 2024 — Three iconic landmarks of Doha’s unique skyline were once again lit up with the Philippine flag on the evening of 12 June 2024 to mark the 126th anniversary of the declaration of Philippine independence.
Officers and personnel of the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in the State of Qatar, along with members of the Filipino expatriate community, trooped to the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel in West Bay, The Torch Doha in Aspire Zone, and Al Jaber Twin Towers in Lusail to watch and cheer as the buildings flashed the Philippine flag.
“We are certainly proud to see the Philippine flag light up Doha on this very special day," said Her Excellency Philippine Ambassador to the State of Qatar Lillibeth V. Pono. "We thank our partners and friends from the Government of the State of Qatar for making this truly wonderful event possible, and for recognizing the contribution of over 240,000 Filipinos to Qatar’s remarkable progress.”
The first to display the Philippine flag was the Sheraton Grand Doha. This five-star luxury hotel that was built in 1979. Its pyramid-like architecture has since figured prominently in the Doha skyline, holding its own in a field of modern skyscrapers.
This was followed by the display of the Philippine flag at The Torch Doha. A landmark of the 15th Asian Games, which was hosted by Qatar, The Torch Doha was completed in 2007 and is officially the second tallest structure in the peninsula.
The event was capped off by the illumination of the Philippine flag at the Al Jaber Twin Towers in Lusail’s Marina District. Housing offices, a hotel, and retail facilities, the twin buildings feature a unique dynamic architecture with criss-cross grids that light up at night.
