In her opening remarks, Ambassador Pono noted that the Filipino culture “has been forged and continues to be reshaped by our history and our environment.” She adds that “It is a culture that is never static. It is dynamic and complex. It follows us. It manifests itself in untold ways. It is, as the movie goes, everything and everywhere all at once.”

The event also fell on a September, which is when the Philippines commemorates the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month, or MANA Mo.

“One of the strongest indicators of Filipino culture is how the status of the Philippines as a maritime and archipelagic country, one that is strongly committed to a rules-based international order, has permeated our way of doing things,” Ambassador Pono said. “We are an archipelago of over 7,000 islands bound by oceans and seas. We have a rich maritime heritage and culture that we as Filipinos should be proud of.”
