05 September 2016- “Bamboo Flowers” a film by multi-awarded director Maryo J. delos Reyes, was featured at the Katara Drama Theater on August 30 to mark the celebration of Buwan ng Wika (Philippine National Language Month).
Shot on location on the Abatan River in Bohol, the movie chronicles the lives of regular people living on the island and narrates the complications of their daily lives as well as their dreams, hopes, fears, struggles, and disappointments. The movie interweaves three stories which provide a good insight into Filipino family relations, where characters are played with emotional resonance to the plight of overseas Filipinos who seek better work opportunities abroad in order to provide for the family they left behind.
The Philippine Embassy in Doha, in cooperation with the Film Development Council of the Philippine (FDCP) which co-produced the film, facilitated the film screening intended mainly for the Filipino community in Doha as part of the annual celebration of Buwan ng Wika. Also in attendance during the film showing were several members of the ASEAN Committee in Doha and other Asian embassies.
"I thank Katara for the support it has given the Philippine Embassy in organizing its cultural activities. Katara served as venue for the two major cultural activities of the Philippine Embassy last year, which included the performance tour of our flagship ballet company. This year's screening of Bamboo Flowers is a continuation of our efforts to promote Filipino culture in this part of the world," said Ambassador Wilfredo C. Santos.
The film showing is part of the cultural diplomacy program of the Philippine Embassy in Doha aimed at increasing awareness and appreciation for Filipino culture through the medium of cinema.
